BULGARIA

With no less than seven mountain ranges criss-crossing the country, and an extensive system of trails through a rich and varied landscape of unspoilt alpine forests, meadows and lakes, Bulgaria is a true haven for Horse Riders. Centres, such as those in the Balkans and Sredna Gora Mountains, offer a fantastic range of fast riding trails on spirited, sure-footed horses, high into the wild wooded mountains. An open vista with a distinct lack of fences, allows for long pacey canters and gallops across an undulating terrain, crossing cool, clear rivers and skirting the famous waterfalls of the region. Trails lead through forgotten villages, past enchanting monasteries and fairy-tale castles. Accommodation on these tours often ranges from simple but hospitable traditional guest houses to basic wilderness camping.

In contrast, vibrant cultured capital Sofia, located at the base of Vitosha Mountain, is surrounded by sprawling parkland, and has many riding establishments offering tuition in dressage and jumping, as well as day rides and tours for both beginner and experienced riders. Bulgaria is home to more than 400km of sensational Black Sea coastline. Coastal riding tours are available from a host of equestrian centres providing riders with beach riding opportunities, from week long trails along scenic deserted shores, to short day rides, with fast canters along the popular and aptly named 8km Sunny Beach.

With its delightful scenery, abundant wildlife, colourful traditions, and friendly hosts providing sublime local wines and hearty cuisine, Bulgaria is an outstandingly popular riding destination.

“We had a lovely week here. The riding was great and it was good to be in a quiet rural area, away from the touristy areas.”
