For a small country Albania has a wide variety of landscapes from the mountainous east to the low lying plains in the west and plenty of undeveloped coastline. Roads and infrastructure are limited outside the main towns and cities. Until recently horses were the main mode of transport in the country, yet there are only a small number of riding holidays. The climate is Mediterranean - dry and hot in the summer, mild and wet in winter, except in the mountains when it can be cold with snow from December to March. The small Kali shqiptar is the only native breed of horse and it's mainly used to pull carts and as a pack animal.
