| Horsesense: |
The Lazy L&B is well known for its horseback riding program. Our experienced staff of wranglers will carefully select your own horse for the week. With rides ranging from three and a half hours to all day long, beginner and advanced groups are kept small to enhance your enjoyment and allow special instruction. Surrounded by three mountain ranges; the Wind River Range, the Absaroka Wilderness and the Owl Creek mountains on the Indian Reservation, the riding is superb.
What makes the Lazy L&B unique is the opportunity to trot and lope through some of the most diverse terrain imaginable. Red rock and sand-canyon draws lead you up onto the high plateaus of the Reservation. Trot along the cottonwood river bottoms and tall rangeland grasses into colorful badland country. In contrast, experience the mountain meadows, abundant with wild flowers, or alpine country where early and late in the season you may see herds of elk and deer, moose or coyotes. For those who don't like to ride, we have horses that don't like to be ridden. . .
There is a supervised riding program for children 5 years and older that includes riding and safety instruction. Two nights a week the children eat early with the wranglers, one night being a hayride BBQ. Their dinner is followed by activities such as hiking, roping and corral games. There's a petting zoo for the younger ones. |

 |
| Room and Board* : |
The lodge has a cozy fireplace, library and game tables where guests can enjoy time to themselves, an early cup of coffee before breakfast, visiting with others, games, and a special evening of cowboy poetry and songs. Tucked in the cottonwood trees and arranged around a central courtyard and along the river, the log cabins are comfortably furnished with casual western flavor. Ranging in size from the old 1-room schoolhouse for one or two to large family cabins that house up to eight, they all have a small refrigerator, private bath or shower, electric heat, and porches, some with views of the Absaroka and Wind River mountain ranges.
Nothing quite hits the spot like a delicious home cooked ranch supper after a long day's ride. The Lazy L&B is famous for it's ranch fresh meals with home made breads and desserts. Start the day with a hearty buffet breakfast with homemade muffins and cinnamon rolls, eggs and bacon or pancakes. If you prefer, enjoy fresh fruit and cereal. Our lunches are served either at a buffet picnic on the lodge porch or at a scenic location on an all-day ride. Three nights each week guests enjoy supper in our beautiful dining room, the other evenings outdoor BBQ's are the rule. For those with special diets, please notify us when making your reservation, and we will gladly accommodate your needs.
BYOB is the norm at the ranch although beer and wine is served only at happy-hour several nights a week. |
 |
| Alternate activities: |
Anglers can enjoy fishing in the stocked ponds, the East Fork of the Wind River on the ranch, or in the neighboring Wiggins, Bear Creek and Wind Rivers. Other activities include hiking, swimming in the river or the solar heated ranch pool, riflery, leather shop and games, including volley ball, horseshoes, and pool.
In the town of Dubois there is a weekly evening of square dancing, a chance to visit the Big Horn Sheep Center and museum and time to browse the attractive western shops along the authentic boardwalks. |
 |
| Weather: |
The weather in the summer months is dry and hot in the day, and cool at night. The temperature changes dramatically with sunrise and sunset as the dry ground does not capture heat. Generally speaking there is little likelihood of rain in the summer although the occasional thunderstorm may suddenly arise. The environment is definitely Rocky Mountain High. |

| ITINERARY |
| Ranch Stay at Lazy L& B Ranch |
Spectacular red clay cliffs greet you on your drive into the ranch which sits in the East Fork valley of the Wind River Mountain range at an altitude of 7200. Located amidst lushly green cottonwoods, with a meandering river bordering the ranch, the ranch lies just on the other side of paradise. Catering to families as well as couples the ranch has an extensive riding program through the mountainous areas that surround the ranch as the photographs reveal. The area is filled with elk and deer on the ground, hawks and eagles overhead. The riding program is designed to keep the less and more experienced riders entertained and comfortable while riding through an area of great beauty. There is a special children's riding program for children 5 and older and parents can spend up to three evenings a week on dinners without their children who will probably opt for specially prepared meals with their wranglers on half of the nights at the ranch. After a day of riding Lazy L & B provides an idyllic environment to lay back and watch the day turn to evening, from your porch, or gathering in the well appointed lounge area in the beautiful central wooden lodge building. Bear Basin Wilderness Camp Horseback Trip |
| Day 1: |
Arrive at the Lazy L&B Ranch between 8-9am and after some ranch coffee and packing your personal gear we will head out for Bear Basin Camp on your personally selected mountain horse. You will at once notice the changing terrain from our cottonwood river bottom with red rock cliffs to the pine covered mountains with Castle Rock looming in the distance. Our day will be spent exploring our way through creeks and forests and high open meadows filled with wildflowers. We will travel close to 2500 ft in elevation gain to the Base of Castle Rock before we drop into the Wilderness Camp. Have your camera ready for the trip into camp, our return trip later in the week will cover totally different country. After arriving in camp at 3-4 in the afternoon. We will settle in with some snacks and drinks. You may want to explore our close by fishing hole in Bear Creek ( fishing license needed) or just sit and relax enjoying the view of the mountain peaks rising above camp. Hearty mountain cooking is prepared in our cook tent and enjoyed in the adjoining dining tent or around the campfire. Our natural spring provides all the mountain fresh water for the camp. Sleep in our roomy guest tents supplied with wood burning stoves for heat, and cots and pads. Or grab your sleeping bag and sleep under the stars. |
| Day 2-5: |
Your morning will start when you want it to. If you are an early riser the coffee will be ready. If you want to sleep in the smell of bacon cooking over the fire will entice you up. Each day will be a different ride exploring all parts of Bear Basin. Ride one may take you out to an historic wilderness cow camp overlooking Horse Creek canyon. Another ride will take you 7 miles up to the head of Bear Creek and Nine Mile Pass. This pass is over 11,000 feet in elevation. You will see numerous waterfalls, creeks and beautiful evergreen forests. You may want to take a shorter ride to the valley of Shangri La under Little Castle Peak, leaving the rest of the day to explore the area around camp. Guests have found 7 point elk antler sheds in this valley along with ancient arrow heads. Another top of the world ride will take you either to Teepee Pass or up to Blue Creek Pass. At both locations you are likely to see herds of Elk moving across the high altitude tundra. Maybe a fishing ride is what interests you. We will work our way down Bear Creek to a spot in the steep canyons that very few people have ever fished. Each evening we will relax around the Campfire enjoying our camp cooked meals. Perhaps a shower is on the agenda to freshen you up. Not a problem. Enjoy our outdoor shower with plenty of hot water and privacy. |
| Day 6 or last day: |
Time to pack up camp after a leisurely breakfast. We will head back to the Lazy L&B Ranch by one of the many return routes. The most direct will take you by an operating mountain cow camp and down across the prairie and back to the lush ranch headquarters. If its a Thursday you may want to ride back down to lower Bear Creek where the ranch is having a cookout. Other days enjoy our supper at the Lazy L&B before heading back to town to a prearranged motel.
