Spain: Costa de Luz Ride: Fantasia

What: If you enjoy a good canter and great gallop this is the ride for you. Beaches, sandy ground and firebreak roads provide a superior opportunity to safely run your horses at top speeds.  Rides include 5-days of riding and optional one day visit to Classical Dressage Center in Jerez. Riders will stay at newly built 21 bedroom Hotel Adiafa offering rooms with full sea view. the change in accommodations makes a good ride for competent riders an outstanding opportunity for some safe fun on horseback.

General Description: The Costa de Luz is the real Andalucia, beautiful, unspoiled by the tourism that affects Spain's other coasts. The riding begins from Barbate, a charming coastal fishing village of 20,000 plus  inhabitants, big enough to supply exciting evenings and quiet enough to permit good riding. Barbate is conveniently located near a  5000 hectares Parque Natural de la Brena y Marismas de Barbate providing a perfect base for riding, whether it be spirited riding along the golden beaches, or sandy trails that surround the area, through pine forests or over ancients farmland trails. All riders enjoy a one day break from riding and may choose to spend a day visiting the world famous Royal Spanish Riding School in Jerez, where you will see a superb display of classic dressage, Spanish style.  

WHAT TO EXPECT:
 
 Horsesense:

 You need to be at least an intermediate rider capable of long extended trots and canters and even the occasional gallop. Weight restriction of 182 pounds. The horses are Hispano-Arab crossed averaging 15.3 hands safe and forward going. The tack is English style. The horses are kept in San Ambrosio a small village at the center of the national park, where the riding begins and ends each day.

 
 Getting There:
Malaga Airport is nearest international airport. Riders and non-riders are picked up at 2:30 PM Sunday at Malaga airport arriving at destination Barbate at 5 PM. Drop-off is on Sunday leaving Barbate  at 8:30 AM arriving Malaga at 11 noon.  Transfers that conform to that time schedule are included in the rates.

Room and Board:
Meals are typically Andalusian with superb meat and fresh fish dishes such as tuna or swordfish. Vegetarians can be catered for with delicious pastas, tortillas and vegetarian stews. Meals are accompanied by good Spanish wines or soft drinks. Meals are taken at typical Spanish bars during the ride or at quality restaurants in the evening. Accommodations are now at beachfront 3 star Hotel Adiafa. All rooms are double rooms with full bathroom facilities, balcony, sea view, air, conditioning, international tv and internet connection by wi-fi or cable. .

Temperatures in the winter average in the high 50's (15 C) and during July and August they approach 90's Fahrenheit (32  C).

Holidays run Sunday to Sunday except for 2006 Christmas holidays which run Thursday to Thursday. We will be closed over the new year holiday.

II- DAY BY DAY SAMPLE TOUR ITINERARY:
Day1: Sunday: Collection from Malaga airport at 14:30, transfer to Barbate arriving at 17:00, dinner at 20:30. accompanied by a discussion of weeks riding holiday.
Day2: Monday: Guests are collected from their accommodation at 9:30 each morning. . An introductory ride where you get to know your horse with the faster paces being introduced as your confidence grows. The route leads through the beautiful pine forest towards the 17th century tower ‘Mecca” overlooking Cape Trafalgar.
Day3: Tuesday: Enjoy your first beach ride, after riding through the pine forest fo Hierbabuena Beach, where there is plenty of opportunity to canter and finally let go with a memorable beach gallop.
Day4: Wednesday: Today's route  takes us to cliffs overlooking Barbate. The ride has superb views of Barbate, the surrounding mountains and on a clear day North Africa. It will be a day with lots of long gentle canters.
Day5: Thursday: A day free form riding. An optional excursion to the royal Spanish riding school at Jerez is available. After the display there is time to visit the tack shop nearby, go to the Museo del Enganche or even have some sherry tasting. Lunch is taken at a typical Spanish bar in Jerez.
Day6: Friday: The Route leads through the pine forest towards the scene of the famous sea battle where Lord Nelson lost his life at Cape Trafalgar. We make our into the beach and follow the coast to El Palmar spending most of the ride on the beach enjoying canters and gallops.
Day7: Saturday: Spending the whole day in the pine forest the day’s riding follows roller coasters of sands and allows plenty of opportunity to canter and gallop. The route eventually follows the cliffs leading to Los Canos de Meca.
Day 8: Sunday: Transfer to Malaga leaving Barbate at 8:30 AM and arriving Malaga by 11 AM.

Accordingly, arrangements (routes or facilities) are subject to change depending on local conditions and hotel choice may vary due to availability.  Also, the tour may be arranged in different order than is described above.
