Riding Holidays | Namibia
Namibian horse riding holidays are quite different to riding holidays elsewhere in southern Africa. In Namibia most equestrian holidays are about experiencing spectacular scenery from the back of a horse rather than game viewing on horseback.
Namibia has stunning desert scenery which is ideally suited to explore on horseback and there are a number of professionally run desert riding holidays in Namibia. Reit Safaris have been running their famous Across the Namib Desert ride, from Windhoek to Swakopmund on the coast, for many years. This is more of a horse riding expedition than a riding holiday and covers around 450 kms over nine days. This is definitely a ride only for those looking for real adventure.
Near the border with South Africa, Riet Safaris now also have a trail ride in the Fish River Canyon (the second largest canyon in the World, after the Grand Canyon) and also other riding trails, in areas that have recently opened up and were previously off-limits due to diamond mining; rides such as the Historic Diamond Trail and Klein Aus Vista trail.
There are also game viewing horse riding safaris at Okapuka just north of Windhoek. Rides here are based at a luxury lodge and venture out into the open savannah and up into the mountains. As well as horse riding safaris the stables here also organise endurance rides
on Arab horses which visitors can participate in, these are competitive long distance race rides.
Further west Desert Homestead lodge near to Sossusvlei and Sesruim Canyon offers fantastic riding holidays. One of the big attractions here is the famous Sossusvlei dune field, comprising of the largest sand dunes in the world, some standing at around 300 metres in height. The dunes change colour depending on the light and are always in motion from the wind. There are huge areas of beautiful desert landscape to explore on horseback and lots of activities for non-riders to do.
In the north west is Damaraland, famous for desert elephant and rhino. Join a Damaraland Lodge Ride based at Grootberg Lodge to explore this amazing wilderness area on horseback.
