| Horsesense: |
The longer tours require riders who are in to enjoy some long, hard paced hours in the saddle. Comfort with all the paces is necessary on longer rides. The Icelandic Horse is between 13 and 14. 2 hands (pony size) but despite his diminutive height he is a powerhouse, capable of riding large folks a long distance. On all of the longer rides there will be loose running herds running with the ride and providing alternate fresh mounts. |
|
|
 |
It is always a challenge and a thrill to ride in Iceland. The weather is warm enough in the day to require a good 'stripdown' but there is always some rain, some sun, and through this beautiful but demanding environment there rises a star from the land, the Icelandic Horse, a product of a thousand years of isolation on this small remote island that has the nerve to call itself a country. The pace of the rides especially the long tours is moderate to fast with riders switching horses to make sure the pace does not slow down. Riding at moderate to fast paces is made tolerable and fun by the fact that more often then not your horse is tolting, a magical gait that is as fast a sprightly trot, but one that requires no posting as the horses motion drives you into the flat, special Icelandic saddle. Hundreds of thousands have ridden the wilderness of Iceland which is sending out it songs to your ears. |
 |
|
| WHAT TO EXPECT: |
| Getting There : |
| Kevlavik Airport which is a short and convenient transfer to all locations you need to go to.Getting from Kevlavik to meeting place is generally as easy as walking out of the small airport and getting on modern comfortable shuttle transfer buses to Reykjavik, the capitol city and about half hour from airport. |
 |
| Room and Board : |
|
The hotel provides modern rooms with private bathroom. On longer tours comfort and privacy are sacrificed in the wilderness where you will experience sleeping bag accommodations in more communal sleeping rooms. Scandinavian food styles predominate and there will be three hearty meals a days plus snacks. |
 |
| Alternate activities : |
| Persons opting for the hotel stays will find a full range of programs for non-riders. Iceland offers a host of day tour companies that will do anything from whale viewing trips, to wilderness four wheel drives, to a day at the beach in the winter at the Blue Lagoon. |
 |
| Weather : |
| During your riding season from June to September the days will be moderately warm, including weather warm enough to wear short-sleeved shirts especially when the sun is out. On other hand the weather in Iceland is subject to daily changes. Rain gear is supplied and you will inevitably ride through periods of short rain, followed by rainbows, sun and repeat of that pattern. The evening weather for those of you in much of Western Europe or United States will be cool, but not cold. |
 |
| Special Considerations : |
| Iceland's concerns for the health of their herd requires that they ask you to take special precautions in arriving with cleaned riding clothes. You may wish to contact us about the exact procedures. Used boots, riding wear, saddlebags etc. must be disinfected before arrival in Iceland. That is because infectious diseases can easily be brought into the country, which pose a great danger for the horses. Riding wear is normally washed and shoes and leather articles are washed and cleaned with iodine or some other fluid disinfectant. |

Winding through valleys and hot spring |
| Day1: |
Arrival: The tour members arrive at Keflavík Airport, Iceland. They take the bus from Keflavík to Reykjavík (BSÍ). They will be greeted by representatives of Eldhestar at 17.30 - 18.00 at Hotel Loftleidir, who will arrange further transportation to our farm Vellir in Hveragerði. There the tour members will be lodged in guesthouses. The first evening we all have dinner together and Eldhestar provides details about the next few days. |
| Day2: |
Hveragerði – Kolviðarhóll: From Hveragerði, in Ölfus municipality, we follow the old route to Hellisheiði. When we reach the moor we continue to the volcano Hengill along the lavafield Kristnitökuhraun. This lava came from the eruption of Hengill during the year 1000, the same year Iceland officially became Christian. The old folkstories say that the eruption was a revenge of the old gods Thór, Óðinn and Freyr. We continue on the track between lava and hills "milli hrauns og hlíðar", down to Kolviðarhóll where people have stopped for a rest for hundreds of years. We spend the night in the sleeping bag accomodations of the farm or Hotel Eldhestar or nearby hotel (depends on if you choose the Tour 9a or 9b). 21 km, 4 hours. |
| Day3: |
Kolviðarhóll - Nesjavellir – Villingavatn: We continue north below the mountains Húsmúli and Hengill. We dismount and lead the horses through the narrow cleft to Marardalur (Valley of Horses). We ride through Dyrfjöll (Door-Mountains) and when we reach the mountain top we can overlook lake Thingvallavatn. The lake is by the cleft where the Icelanders for hundreds of years have had their democratic meetings called "Allthing". The track continues to Nesjavellir and we leave the horses at the farm Villingavatn. 30 km, 6-7 hours. |
| Day4: |
Villingavatn - Reykjadalur – Hveragerði: We ride up the mountains and get a splendid view, again over lake Thingvallavatn, but also over the mountain Skjaldbreiður. Skjaldbreiður is an extraordinary shaped mountain always covered with snow. Then we pass the two volcano lakes Kattatjarnir, shimmering in blue and grey. After a while we can see the steep of lava that leads us down to the valley Reykjadalur with hot springs. We can take a bath in the warm riverlet of the valley before we leave for Hveragerði where the tour ends. We go by car back to Reykjavik. 20 km, 4-5 hours. The tour participants will be back in Reykjavik around 17.00. |

West of Kjalhraun we ride through a narrow cleft to the valley Thjófadalur (the Valley of Thieves). The valley is circular and hidden behind the mountains. It is one of the few places along Kjölur rich with grass. From the valley, we ride over a little mountain comb called Thröskuldur, and from there, we follow a smooth path to Hveravellir, where we can bathe in the hot springs. 40 km, 8 hrs. |
