 WHAT TO EXPECT:
Hungary - by mentioning that word what do we think of involuntarily? The puszta with its spirited horses, hot peppers (paprika), Sissi the Queen of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, wild Mongolians, the famous composer Franz Liszt, the spicy Salami, the capital Budapest and its 1000 years of chequered history.  The tour operator organizes center based riding trails and will abduct a limited number of guests to the heart of the Southern Puszta, where first settlers arrived  6000 years ago. Guided theme trails by wild steppes, nature conservation areas, marshes and shady forests provide insight into a world of past days. Here you will still meet flocks of sheep and cattle herds or friendly farmers accomplishing their daily work in the fields. In accordance with the respective seasons, you will observe protected bird species and native wild animals. The spring is charmed by the awakening of rare plants from seemingly lifeless sand. Summer is the time for ripe fruits, which invite to cost along the never-ending dirt roads. The autumn with pleasant temperatures is particularly ideal for fast gallops. The winter leaves melancholy riding experiences to a smothered and traceless landscape in snow. All year organized gorgeous full moon rides thrill advanced riders. A cultural survey will be seen at the Historical Memorial Park of Ópusztaszer or in the city of eclecticism, Szeged. Rest of time will treat oneself to some local culinary delights and relaxation in thermal spas.

Weather :

The Southern great Plain enjoys a continental climate; hot in summer, cold in winter. Coldest month: January (4.1 o C) /40 F.
Warmest month: July/August (24.7 o C)/78 F. These are the official median numbers; but we are living here since 1997 and can tell a little bit different: Summer is hot and dry. Winter is cold and dry down with clear sky and sunny most of the time - in total up to 280 days of sunshine/year.) We are riding all the year anyways. The sandy ground does not harm the hoofs so much, like black soil. Gorgeous winter rides trough the plain is one of the most attractive things to experience. Afterwards relax at the Thermal Spa in (39C/100F) hot water.

ITINERARY 2008 – Adventure Puszta Trails - Center Based Riding Tours

Day1: Journey or transfer to the riding location in the Hungarian Puszta
The journey to the riding location passes through the Hungarian Southern Great Plains past lovely villages and steppes with  distant horizons, where sky’s touching ground. Finally leave the public streets and continue on dirt roads leading to the secluded holiday farm “Virág Tanya” (Winner of Hungarian Tourism-Award 2005) in Ruzsa. Find an Equestrian Manor with restored adobe buildings tastefully adapted as comfortable guest houses, vacation homes and holiday apartments. Welcome to  the southern Hungarian Puszta! Meet your local host Christen Oliver, a native Austrian who left city life behind him and is offering to take people on horse riding adventures through the Hungarian landscape.

He will show you the holiday lodge, the guestrooms and the stable. In the evening the Hungarian staff will arrange the typical Hungarian meal “Bogrács” Goulash cooked in stew-pot on open fire. Dine and get to know each other. Then your tour-guide will give details of your week-long program.

Day2: The Stable, the spirited Hungarian Horses and your first ride to the vicinity. Farmers breakfast with Hungarian specialities will surely make a real good start for your riding vacation. Then off you go to meet a special breed, the Hungarian Sport Horse – Warm-blooded on hand in a well-equipped stable. All horses stand tall with a good appearance and will carry you with confidence and sure trots and gallops through the terrain. In the round pen you can find your best horse and saddle for your own comfort. A first ride into the neighbourhood will give you the first impression of how it feels like to be in the middle of endless meadows and fields. Meet the native inhabitants of the Puszta at one of the typical “kocsma's”, taverns, which are mostly affiliated with small shops to supply the rural population. Bestride will be continued by fleet gallops thru acacia forests and along wide sandy roads. In the evening you will be served some traditional Hungarian meal with the indispensable local moonshine, the infamous “Pálinka”!
Day3:

Cross country ride to the inhabited islands in the sea of the Puszta
After breakfast, mount your horse, take your picnic lunch pack then off you ride on your first horse trail. You will ride past local farmlands under crop, homesteads and barns run by farmers in traditional ways, and become acquainted with the delicious products like asparagus, juicy peaches, hearty cherries and mulberries, just to name a few of all year-round delicacies. But never miss to have a close encounter “type three” with the world-famous Hungarian red pepper or paprika which is so hot that it takes your breath away.  Then have a break at the hot springs at Erzsébet  Spa in Mórahalom, a 4 star Wellness temple in the Southern Great Plain of Hungary. Dine at the Puszta Csarda to taste the splendid local dishes of your choice.

Day4:

Riding trail among the shades of aspen trees with wildlife observation
Meet for an early breakfast. This morning you will set off for a long riding trail through the forests with a good chance to see lots of the local game like pheasants, rabbits, fallow-deers or even wild-boars. Bring your camera, it’s a real safari! Have a romantic picnic in the woods. From the peak level, you can observe wildlife feeding. Extensive clearings invite repeatedly for canters. At a remote spot you will be surprised by a traditional menu cooked by local hunters. Ride back accompanied by the blood-red Sunset.

Day5:

Daytrip to the city of sunshine combined with cultural and culinary highlights
Fry up and leave the tranquillity of the Puszta to visit Szeged, the city of sunshine.  A decent brunch at the Virág Café followed by a walk along the river Tisza and the avenues, boulevards with a strikingly homogenous architecture that preserves the Eclecticism and Art Nouveau of the turn of the century, stun visitors with the atmosphere of a quiet college town. You may visit the cathedral, the unique synagogue and the Reök Palace with its changing exhibitions. Dive into the hot springs at the historical Anna Spa and relax within the elegant wellness area. At the end of the day taste the famous spicy fish-soup, “Halászlé”, cooked from a selection of local freshwater fish.

Day6:

Adventure ride to the old domestic animal breeds of nomads
Hearty breakfast followed by a day ride across a wild and romantic Puszta-landscape – a revelation of sheer natural beauty.  This trail ride passes the Hungarian longhorn, the formidable and exceptional ‘Mangalica’ pig (Revoke your memories of tasty bacons and hams) or the Walachian longwool sheep. Watch some herds of water buffalo moving and grazing in the reserve of undisturbed marshland. All these gregarious animals were once brought by the riding peoples of the Asian steppe and supplied Europe’s metropolises with fresh meat for centuries. In the evening you shouldn’t miss to taste some local food at the so called “Szalonnasütés”, a BBQ from  low cholesterol woolly pig with delicious spices and side dishes.

Day7:

Riding day thru vineyard cultivations, followed by wine tasting
Breakfast. Ride through wine-growing areas of the sand ridge. Old vines as the Muscatel, Kövidinka or Kadarka have survived some younger varieties and some are now demonstrating an old heritage tracing back to the Roman Empire. Enjoy a picnic between the vines and gather force for extended trots and gallops across marshes and on the never-ending dirt paths of the Rolling Plains of Hungary. Chill out  at a wine cellar with the famous Sand Ridge Wines, home made salami and cheese will be served.

Day8: Carriage ride, photo safaris and relaxation at the guest house's natural pond.
Cosy Breakfast in the garden. This day serves you and the horses to rest  after intense riding days. Maybe you embark on a comfortable ride in horse carriage or just relax at the natural pond on the property. The court and the environment comprise many motives for your own photo safari. In the afternoon, attend the hours-long preparation of the famous kettle goulash cooked on an open fire; this proceeding is exclusively reserved for the Hungarian men according to a strict ceremonial. The evening will be celebrated with the consumption, good wine and Hungarian zither music
Day9:

Ride to the weekly market, a central meeting place and still supplier for daily life needs.
Delicious brunch at the market. Experience colourful market life and the rich offers of marketers, farmers, sugar bakers, tanners, animal breeders, artisans and real gypsies. Taste culinary delights, home made products, find  bric-a-brac  and with a bit of luck valuables might wait for “always” dickering market visitors. Ride back past lovely meadows and beat the fields with seasonal fruits. Evening meal of your choice at country inn.

Day10:

Riding tour with bird watching, fish ponds and fishermen life  Rich breakfast basket. A ride through extensive wild steppes and grasslands to the fish ponds in the nature reserve Madarász-tó. A hotbed of rare birds, invites you to an impressive natural spectacle  among biodiversity and the tranquillity of fishermen life. After refreshment at the dam, ride back home through the affiliated channels. Clay oven dinner at isolated farmstead.

Day11: Rózsa Sándor, the Robin Hood of the Puszta
Breakfast. Riding on the foot prints of the robbers' captain Rózsa Sándor. The village Ruzsa was the central refuge of the  folk hero born in Szeged in 1813. Consistent with his implacability against the rich, he was described as “The horrors of the Puszta” in many robbers novels. The further legend will be narrated by your guide. As a reminder you will receive a robbers snack under the Rózsa Sándor tree in Ásotthalom, and will hear the story oh how the robber king  sought shelter in the mighty crown from the gendarmes. Continue your  ride through the hundred year old woods of the forest school. Subsequently campfire with juicy robbers spits.
Day12: Sightseeing tour to the National Memorial Park at Ópusztaszer
Breakfast at Lodge. Visit the history of the Magyars entering the Carpathian Basin. A 55 hectare sized Ethnographic Open-Air Museum presents popular monuments, tent shaped yurts and exhibitions to preserve the Great Hungarian Plain’s peasant architecture and traditional way of life. There is also the excavation of the monastery Szer, the famous circular picture of Árpád Feszty and an exhibition of unique European rarities. Finally live to see a breath-taking riding show by the famous Csikós (Hungarian Cowboy’s). Take supper at typical Hungarian Csárda.
Day13: Gallop via prairies of Eastern Europe and lunch with a local herder
Farmers breakfast. Today’s riding paths will take you again on the endless plains with its beautiful, breathtaking landscape. Be invited for lunch at extensive grazing land with a real Puszta shepherd, who simmers a fresh goulash amid his flock of sheep. Long distance trot and gallop routes across the prairie lead back to the base headquarters. For dinner try home made Kolbász  (hung. for sausage), sheep cheese, seasonal vegetables and sweet seductions.
Day14: Ride to the wonders of nature, one of the last marshlands within the Puszta   Hot breakfast. Half-day ride to the 1990 protected marsh meadow, the so-called "miracle grass" by Ásotthalom. Admire protected fauna and plant species. Certainly this is the opportunity to take a great picture of  herons, tortoises, buzzards, common snipes, hyacinths, lilies or orchids in front of a permanently colour changing swamp. Already in the 19th century, the Austrian-Hungarian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) also visited this unique natural treasure. Finally the thermal sources of the spa in Mórahalom provide full relaxation after long rides. A casual barbecue makes this day to die away.
Day15: Farewell and departure
Breakfast. Own departure or transfer to the airport.
