Outfitter will rely on a variety of horses along the longer routes. Riders will have an opportunity to enjoy a more varied pace in our ride in the lower altitudes.
Our five location trip is designed to introduce you to a more verdant, gentle Ecuador without testing your abilities to endure the higher altitudes. The trip is divided into two segments separated by a vehicle drive to a more Southern region where once again you will experience a gentler Ecuador then the rugged stuff of the high Andes . Octalvo market add-on's by arrangement. All of our journeys begin and end with Quito transfers and one overnight in Quito at the beginning of the trip is advisable, even though Quito will be at a higher altitude then where you will be riding.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Getting There* :
Quito , capitol of Ecuador is 10 miles from ranch by crow and over 35 miles and many civilizations by car. Transfers from Quito to ride center are included .

Weather:
Weather pattern on given day and over course of season is difficult to predict with any precision. October, February, March and April are rainiest months and there is generally very little rain from July through September. With August and September often producing dusty, less lush environment. Still it can end up the other way around relative to rain. Trips can generally be done whole year round, as even the rainy season; we usually do have sunny mornings and nice views. Unpredictable rain patterns dictate that you bring good rain gear including jacket and trousers. Complicating picture is the ability of temperature to change with altitude and sunlight. Altitude ranges from 1400 to 3400 meters (4600' to, 5000'). Temperatures range from 7 to 28 degree Celsius (44 to 82 Fahrenheit).
ITINERARY
Day1:
Transport from Quito to the Green Horse Ranch, inside the National Reserve Pululahua, about 25 miles north from Quito . Robust and amiable mountain horses will take us through the stunning landscape of this ancient volcanic crater - the biggest one on the whole American continent and one of only two inhabited craters in the world with its constantly changing sceneries and huge bio-diversity. Riding time about 4 hours. Lunch with panoramic view over valleys and cloud forest covered mountains. Optional photo-stop at the Ecuadorian monument Mitad del Mundo. Accommodation and delicious dinner in art-style country-hotel. Wake up to the amazing view of the the crater walls.
Day2:
On horseback, we enter a tropical climate with a lot of bamboo, sugar cane and banana trees, until we start climbing gently but continually in order to leave the crater to the west. Take a glance on pre-inca ruins along the way. We only come across a few small farmhouses, where the highland farmers scratch a meager income from the steep, infertile land beside the forest. Next to the volcanic springs of El Cachaco, we'll find accommodation in the up to 1 meter thick and 300 years old walls of a colonial Hacienda, reminding us of an old European castle. On the spot we'll learn some more about its fascinating history. Bring your bathing gear for the mineral water Jacuzzi!
Day3:
We'll be riding along green, hilly pastures, passing several stately farms, where we can observe fighting bulls and flower crop for exportation, getting a good impression about present and past of the country. Some extensive canters along fields and pastures make our way shorter this time. This picturesque valley is also the home and breading place of many beautiful horses. Drawing closer to Pichincha volcano, which towers above us at almost 4800 m, we begin our trek along the Northwest side to the tiny, colonial village of Nono , where we find shelter in comfortable country homes. Next to a hot chimney fire, the farmer's family might know to tell us some interesting stories about people and lifestyles.
Day4:
Today we leave Nono and after crossing a ridge that divides the Interandean Valley from the western Andean slopes, where we might catch beautiful views on Guagua Pichincha's ashy crater, we start heading downhill into a lush green region of virgin forests studded with waterfalls toward the fishing resort of Tandayapa. From here, it's a 1-hour drive to the Bellavista nature reserve, where hundreds of colorful hummingbirds have found their home. We'll be welcomed into a comfortable lodge with hot showers and delicious, wholesome food. From the balcony of our shared room, you can enjoy a breath-taking view far over the cloud forest and listen to the sound of exotic birds.
Day5:
After a hearty breakfast, a little hike through Bellavista reserve is open to whoever wishes. Self-guided maps help you to design your adventure through this Andean jungle. After lunch we shall transfer you to the next part of your riding trip, located South from Quito , where again a very different part and scenery of the Ecuadorian Andes awaits you. Sunset is especially beautiful at Hacienda Alegría.
Day6:
Upon desire: Rides to either Corazón (7hours) or Pasochoa (5hours) volcanoes. Majestic Corazón Mountain overlooks the Aloag valley from our viewing point at (4.500 meters). View to the Ilinizas peak, which is covered by snow most of the year. You might have a great possibility to see a Condor. Alternatively Pasochoa Natural Park , with its last remains of virgin Andean forests and peaks up to 4200 meters.
Day7:
We start our ride toward the south of Machachi entering to the slopes of Ruminahui upwards to San Francisco through the sand hills next to the rock, where the magnificent Cotopaxi - highest active volcano in the world - presents the most imposing scenery also surrounded by the Ilinizas, Sincholagua mountains, and the different valleys providing a perfect spot to take a break for lunch. We continue to Limpiopungo glacier lake and arrive to a cozy lodge to have dinner, hot shower and spend the night. Alternative riding route back to Hacienda Alegría the next day.
