Rwanda is situated in central east Africa between Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and the D. R. Congo. It is known as ‘the land of a thousand hills’ due to a mountainous landscape covered in forest and grassy uplands, with a huge variety of wildlife, particularly primates. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is especially beautiful and home to rare mountain gorillas made famous by Dian Fossey’s book ‘Gorillas in the mist’. Lake Kivu in the west has picturesque beaches and Nyungwe Forest National Park in southern Rwanda is east Africa’s largest protected mountain rainforest.

There are no known horse riding holidays in Rwanda although there are reports in October 2011 that a riding centre is being set up. We will bring you more news as soon as we have more details.

Despite Rwanda’s recent turbulent history, the country now has many international visitors and is an up and coming tourist destination in east Africa. It joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 2009. The country is promoting eco-tourism to see the rainforests and learn about the habitat of mountain gorillas and other rare primates. Rwanda has a warm temperate climate, although cooler than other countries at a similar latitude due to its high elevation. The rainy seasons are from February to June and September to December.
