HungaryRiding Holidays | Hungary

Hungary is a country rich in history and culture, with a diverse landscape and great local cuisine. With countryside varying from mountainous areas to the open flatlands of the Great Plain and Hungarian Puszta (barren lands) there is endless space for horse riding. This is a country where you can ride for miles without crossing roads or stopping for gates, open grassland and sandy tracks offering the chance for long exhilarating trots and canters.

Hungary has a temperate climate, similar to the rest of continental Europe and summer months are the most popular with visitors.

There is a long tradition of horse riding in Hungary and there are many local riding stables throughout the country. Experienced riders can explore the Southern Great Plain on horseback from Virag Tanya, a traditional homestead near the town of Szeged. These are week long Puszta Trail riding holidays run by Oliver Christen, an experienced horseman originally from Austria. The rides have a small group size and use forward going responsive horses. The riding pace is fast and so these rides are only for people fit and confident riding at speed in the open. During the week guests will have the chance to experience Hungarian culture and sample the local cuisine with home grown food, including cured hams and cheeses.

Horse riding trails for less experienced riders are also available, especially in the area around Lake Balaton, central Europe’s warmest lake. Here there are a number of riding centres offering hourly lessons and day trails. There is also a week long riding holiday which explores the volcanic hills and forests north of the Lake including visits to ruined medieval castles.
