Riding Holidays | Romania
Visiting Romania on a riding holiday is like taking a step back in time. This is still a mainly agricultural nation, with shepherds tending to their flocks in the hills and cattle being taken out daily from the villages to higher pasture to graze, cowbells clanging. For many people in rural areas horses and carts are still the main mode of transport.
A riding holiday in Romania offers an exciting and challenging experience for more competent riders. There are no gates to open; not are you restricted to bridle paths or tarmac roads. Instead there are seemingly endless meadows, forest tracks, mountain rides and glorious open land to explore. You are riding in parts of Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains. Romanian riding holidays are not for the nervous or beginner rider. The riding is fast in places, but when trail riding the terrain can be steep and so you may have to dismount in places and lead your horse on foot.
The best riding centre in Romania, Equus Silvania, is run by an Austrian couple, Christoph and Barbara Promberger. They organise centre based riding holidays and week-long trail rides in the Carpathians. Whatever your preference, you will be treated to great riding, wonderful scenery, welcoming hosts, knowledgeable guides and fit, willing horses.
Some time during the week is set aside to experience some of the history and culture of the region, with visits to fortified churches, Viscri and Sighisoara.
All of this is only a short flight away! You can fly directly from London Heathrow to Bucharest and indirectly via Amsterdam from a range of regional UK airport.
