Finland is a well developed country, offering visitors the attractions and convenience of modern towns and cities combined with vast expanses of open wilderness, ideal for adventurous outdoor travellers. Most of the country is covered with rolling hills and low lying plains, sprinkled with hundreds of clear lakes and islands. The north has extensive pine forests and is home to the beautiful Lemmenjoki and Oulanka national parks. The Northern Lights can be seen from here in winter!

The northern wilds are perfect for exploring on horseback in summer months. For riders with a real spirit of adventure join a horse riding expedition in Lapland riding Icelandic horses. Explore pristine forest and river valleys, riding amongst pine and birch trees and mountain ash, watching for wildlife such as moose and eagles. Follow reindeer tracks and visit a reindeer farm, ride on a Husky sleigh and eat your evening meals around a camp fire, enjoying the remoteness of this beautiful wilderness.

South and central Finland are home to many equestrian riding centres and local trekking stables. Ypäjä in the southwest particularly is a favourite spot for horse riders and has a big equine college. Visit a horse farm in the south to have a wonderful Finnish horse riding vacation. Experience riding an Icelandic horse with a centre based stay combining lessons and day rides or have a longer trek through the countryside lasting up to four days. Or travel to the Åland Islands off the southwest coast for a weeks’ horse riding holiday based at a large Finnish equestrian centre with tuition in dressage or show jumping and hacks out along quiet rural paths and onto the beach.

You will find many horse breeds in Finland. The native Finnish horse is well known as a draught horse and for its forestry work. It is a strong muscular horse, with a steady temperament and good stamina. Finnish horses are also used for riding and Finnish crosses are common in many equestrian schools. Icelandic horses are also popular, together with European native breeds crossed with Thoroughbreds and Arab types, giving good riding horses.

Spend a few days at the end of your holiday to experience some of Finland’s towns. See traditional wooden churches and try local food at the small cafes, listening to lively Finnish music. Or visit Korvatunturi mountain in Lapland, the mythical home of Santa Claus.
