Riding Holidays | Italy
There is much to consider when thinking of a horse riding holiday in Italy – with the Alps forming its northern border and mile after mile of coastline, there are plenty of beautiful places to explore. Italy is also a hugely cultural country and there are endless possibilities for combining an Italian riding vacation with some sightseeing.
One of the best ways of experiencing the variety of Italian landscape is by taking trail rides into the surrounding countryside. In Tuscany there are trail rides which wind through terraced vineyards, olive groves and cypress avenues, whilst in Campania you can follow horse riding trails high into the mountains for spectacular views or head to the coast for faster beach rides. Italy riding holidays also offer the chance to have – either flatwork or jumping, in an arena or out on a cross country course – there really is something for everyone.
A horse riding holiday in Italy can be either a mobile trail ride, where you and the horses spend at least one night away from the base, or you can choose a centre based ride where you can unpack your suitcase for the week and relax. The majority of horse riding in Italy is English style with English tack and comfortable, reliable horses. The pace is mixed with opportunities for canters, but as is the Italian way, the trail rides are about relaxing and enjoying the countryside rather than rushing from one place to another.
Equestrian vacations are also available in Sicily and Sardinia. There are several week long trail rides in Sicily, particularly in the Madonie Mountains near Cefalù and even at Mount Etna. Sardinia has many riding stables and the north of the island is the best for week long riding holidays.
It is almost impossible to go on a horse riding holiday in Italy and not experience fantastic food and wine. The Italians are famed for their fresh and tasty home cooking, accompanied by delicious local wines. One of the finest riding holidays that combines all of these in one package is the Cilento Ride, south of Pompeii. Italy really is a gastronomic delight!
