Riding Holidays | Honduras
Honduras is not as well recognised as a tourist destination as some of its neighbours, however it has some fascinating and exiting places to explore. It is a big country, the second biggest in Central America and has a huge range of diversity in landscapes, from the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean coast, coral reefs and diving by Utila, to inland mountainous areas and breathtaking lakes and waterfalls in Lago de Yojoa. Most well known for its diving opportunities and hiking tours to see the Copan ruins, Honduras also has some nice horseback riding to offer.
Horse riding vacations are available in the western highland region. Stay at a traditional working Finca and explore horseback trails along mountain paths, visit coffee plantations and try your hand at herding cattle. Ride through protected forest full of wildlife such as toucans and motmots, deer and cusucos. Learn about sustainable farming in this beautiful area, relax in the natural hot springs and sample traditional Honduran cuisine. Or stay at an eco lodge near Copan and have horseback riding tours into the surrounding hills or to rural villages. When not riding, relax at the spa, go on a photography hike or visit a nearby coffee Finca.
The island or Roatán is a very popular place to visit, with its extensive coral reef system inviting divers, white sandy beaches and inland tropical jungle. Join a horse riding tour on Roatán and ride to the inland wooded hills with lovely vistas over the bay below. Journey onto the beaches for some faster rides and visit the ‘Iron Shore’, an area of ancient black coral formations.
The best time to visit Honduras is March to May as this is the driest time. The country has a hot and humid climate and it can rain any time, with September to February being the wettest. Hurricanes can occur between June and November. Honduras is a very hospitable country, although basic and not well developed. As well as the horse riding there are lots of cultural sites to explore.
