| Horsesense: |
Our program is very flexible and can accommodate intermediate to experienced. Riders. Locally bred criollo pantaneiro horses which are sturdy, dependable and calm. The tack involves Western style reining with one hand, pantaneiro saddles for riders which include a long leather covered tree, covered by blankets and sheepskin for a unique and comfortable ride.
FOR NON RIDERS:
Photographic safari ,hiking, boat riding, kayaking, short horse rides, cattle work, birdwatching and barbecues/ picnics out in the bush.
The Pantanal and in particular Mato Grosso South where you will be riding is one of the world's most astonishing environments. It is an area that endures six months of extensive flooding so that much of the habitable land for two and four legged critters disappears and then magically reappears in the dry season. The frequently viewed wildlife include a variety of deer, caimans by the thousands, the giant anteater, the lesser anteater, capybara ( the world's largest rodents), wild boars, crab eating foxes, and giant otters. The bird life is unparalleled including a wild variety of birds from the blue hyacinth macaw to brilliant multi colored parrots, from emus to jabiru storks with their huge nests. The 90,000 acres and 70 square miles you will cover on horseback is sparsely populated, divided into large cattle farms which restrict the flow of cattle but not the rich wildlife. The jaguar, puma, ocelot and other small cats live in the area but only the lucky or committed photographers will be able to view them. The Pantanal is an undeveloped land, with most farms reachable only by air during the rainy season. Most roads that do exist disappear in the rainy season and are at best, roads best negotiated by four wheel drive. Six million cattle and thirty thousand folks spread out from the Amazon to Bolivia, the world's largest wetland and refuge for the untamed wildlife. The horses that move through this land are magical, strong, calm and durable. They are true working horses as the cattle can only be worked by horseback. The criollo pantaneiro horses they use are normally 15 to 16 hands and seemingly unflappable. Pace will of course be determined by terrain, but there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy all the paces on land that is ideal to ride on. Unlike our large wetlands, the ground underneath remains solid and thus you charge through the water without fear of horses getting lost in the mud. |
