Riding Holidays | People's Republic of China
Horse riding holidays in China are all about adventurous journeys to see unforgettable unique locations and cultural sites, riding through really stunning scenery, away from the normal tourist destinations.
Join a Tibetan High Plateau Ride and explore the high Amchok grasslands from horseback. Ride Tibetan mountain horses through the pasturelands from Gomithang to Hongyuan, home to nomadic sheep, yak and horse herds. Tibetan mountain horses are small but strong and surefooted, native to this area and ideally suited to the terrain and high altitude. The ride is accompanied by pack horses or yaks. There is no vehicle support and so this is a true wilderness adventure for confident riders. Visit Tibetan monasteries and stay in tented camps and family guest houses. This ride gives you a real insight into the nomadic culture in this remote and beautiful area. Tibet is located in the north west part of Sichuan province. Journey to the ride location via Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan. There is also time to explore Chengdu itself. The city has lots to see and do and it is well known for the Qingyang Temple, Chengdu zoo as well as traditional arts and crafts.
Week long equestrian vacations in China are also available in the Hunlun Beier grassland of Inner Mongolia, around Hanas Lake in Xinjing province and near Songpan in the Tibetan part of Sichuan. If you are visiting Beijing itself it is possible to arrange a day long horse riding tour in the surrounding area.
Travel to China for the first week in August and visit the annual Litang horse festival. This is a very important and well known event in Sichuan and is where nomads from all over the Tibetan area meet to race their most prized horses. There are also displays of horsemanship skill and traditional dances.
