Safari horses are trained using the same techniques as eventing horses, a strong dressage base and careful jumping plus good stamina training are essential for responsive riding on safari and safety around big game.
Zambia is famously known as 'The Real Africa' due to the country's vast expanses of undeveloped bush areas and plentiful wildlife. With so many different regions to visit in one country it offers travellers the chance to explore a little more off the beaten track than just traditional tourist centres such as Victoria Falls and Lake Tanganyika.
There are several horse riding centres in Zambia offering trail riding into the bush, particularly near to Lusaka, the country’s capital city and to Livingstone, near Victoria Falls. Zambian Horse Safaris based at Shiwa Ngandu in northern Zambia offers horseback safaris on the private Shiwa estate game reserve combined with a two day walking safari in another Big Five Game reserve. The riding safari uses mainly Boerperd horses, well behaved, responsive and surefooted on the African terrain and is guided by Steven Rufus, one of the highest regarded and best known safari guides in Africa. Steven moved his horse safari business to Shiwa Ngandu, also known as 'The Africa House' from Kafue National Park in 2008. At The Africa House riders can enjoy interesting and quite challenging trails across open plains and into mountains, with opportunities for long canters and gallops.
Other places of interest for the adventurous traveller are Luangwa National Park in the east, Kafue National Park in the west and the Livingstone Memorial, the great explorer’s final resting place, not far from Shiwa Ngandu House itself.
