Mauritania is a large country on the Atlantic coast of west Africa, between Mali and Senegal. It has a very arid climate and is covered by the Sahara Desert. It is home to small oasis caravan towns and endless sandy beaches. Most people in Mauritania live in the few cities or fishing ports along the coast.

Camel trekking in the desert of Mauritania is quite popular, but there are very few horses and no horse riding holidays in Mauritania. Mauritania has captivating desert scenery with regions covered by high sand dunes and other areas of rugged escarpments. Many of the oasis villages lie at the bottom of these escarpments fed by spring water from the highlands. The coastal Banc d’Arguin National Park wetland area is a UNESCO site important as a migratory stopping point for an amazing number of bird species.  Mauritania’s capital city is Nouakchott, a coastal fishing town.
