The ‘Sunflower State’ of Kansas is known for its rolling open prairies and huge fields filled with sunflowers and wheat. Much of the State is set within the Great Plains region and is prime agricultural land. This area is also home to a number of cattle ranches. A small number of these ranches have opened their doors to allow guests to visit for a true western vacation experience.

A ranch holiday in Kansas allows you to ride every day, check the cattle, join in with cattle drives, try western roping and learn all about how an authentic ranch operates. Many working ranches in Kansas raise long horn cattle. Enjoy horseback rides across the open range to monitor the condition of grazing land, move fences and look for wildlife. When not riding relax and unwind at the ranch, maybe try a peaceful hiking trail or go fishing.

Eastern Kansas is quite hilly and has lots of forests. This area is great for a Kansas horseback trail riding holiday. Visit the Junction City area for a horse riding holiday at a ranch that has miles of competitive endurance riding trails and also offers a base for western trail riding vacations. While in Kansas visit one of the many horse stud farms where some of these guest ranch horses are raised. Kansas is home to many American horse breeds including Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Tennessee Walkers and Missouri Fox Trotters. There are also quite a few Arabians, Shetlands, Welsh ponies and Warmbloods.

We are always looking for new riding destinations and regularly update the information on this site. If you have information about horse riding or trail rides in Kansas please do contact us.

Visit Wichita in February for Kansas EquiFest, an annual three day horse festival with showing classes, special riding displays and breed exhibits. No visit to Kansas is complete without touring some of the amazing Prairie wilderness areas. Visit Big Basin Prairie Reserve south of Dodge City to see herds of wild Bison, and keep an eye out for prairie chicken (wild grouse)! See the Wizard of Oz museum at Wamego or the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Maybe spend a day sightseeing in Wichita, or hear jazz played in Kansas City. Did you know Kansas City has over 200 fountains, a similar number to Rome!
