Alabama is located in the south of the USA between Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia. Most of Alabama is made up of gently rolling lowland pasture and agricultural farmland, with many forested areas. Historically the State was known for its cotton farms and fruit orchards. Today paper production is big industry with pine plantations springing up all over the state. There are also quite a few cattle ranches and horse farms throughout Alabama.

As with many southern USA States, horse riding is a popular leisure sport in Alabama and you will see all sorts of horse breeds represented here. Equestrian associations hold events throughout the year in many riding disciplines from dressage and show jumping, to endurance riding, polo and western reining or cutting horse displays.

The annual Alabama Horse Fair in January has a Trail Horse competition, similar to ‘Le Trek’, plus working cow horse, roping and reining contests. Despite the popularity of horse riding in Alabama there are no known horse riding holidays or equestrian vacations in Alabama. There are however quite a few riding centres which allow tourists to join a day ride if staying in the local area and several horse boarding facilities if you wish to travel to Alabama with your own horse.

We are always looking for new riding destinations and regularly update the information on this site. If you have information about horse riding or trail rides in Alabama please do contact us.

Take time during your trip to Alabama to visit the southern coast for chill out time on a beach, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and try the local crawfish and shrimp cuisine. Travel to Mobile on Shrove Tuesday to see the original and oldest Mardi Gras in the USA, or the nearby beautiful Bellingrath gardens. The best time to visit Alabama is early Spring or Autumn, outside the hot humid summer season.
