The Republic of Chad is in north central Africa adjacent to Niger and Sudan. It is a hot, mainly dry country with desert in the north, semi desert in the middle and a wetter savannah in the south, plus the Lake Chad wetland area in western Chad.

Horses are a luxury in Chad and ownership of a horse shows high social status. Most horses belong to tribal leaders and the wealthy select few. Horse racing is very popular with weekend races taking place at the capital N’Djamena’s hippodrome, located near to the presidential palace. The top race is called the Gargache. Horses are also sometimes used for carriage driving or carting. Since there are few horses there are no horse riding holidays in Chad.

We are always looking for new riding destinations and regularly update the information on this site. If you have information about horse riding in Chad please do contact us.

The main seasons in Chad are a warm dry winter from November to April, to a hot wet summer from June to September. Arabic and French are widely spoken. Chad is not currently a favourable tourist destination due to unrest.
