Namib Desert Hikes
What:

Knowledgeable guides will assist you in getting the most out of this unique experience, catching a glimpse of the desert's small creatures and learning about the special adaptations that enable plants and animals to survive in the arid climate of the Namib Desert, one of the oldest and driest deserts in the world.

Activities:

Walking is the main activity, allowing guests the chance to explore the varied terrain and observe the extraordinary desert wildlife that can only be spied on foot, and would never be seen from a car. However, other activities are included as well, and morning hikes are combined with excursions to a nearby township to tour local marketplaces, schools and native homes, as well as a cruise featuring the chance to see dolphins, seals, and other sea creatures. Seasonal swimming in natural pools (when available depending on the amount of rainfall), and trail rides on horseback (additional cost) are also available. Horseback trips include a light lunch, such as chicken salad on toast or pancakes prepared by the transport team.

General Description: The Namib Desert offers a diversity of terrains, which vary from dunes to sand and rocky plains to mountains and dry riverbeds. The day begins with a healthy breakfast plus coffee or tea, hikes start relatively early in the morning, when it is still cool and most of the desert wildlife is still active. By noon, the desert landscape is often enveloped by scorching heat and, where possible, hikers rest in the shade of trees and rock formations during the hottest part of the day, eating fruit for lunch, reading and relaxing. Dinners are served by the campfire under open, starlit skies. Camp gear and luggage are transported from camp to camp by vehicle. Appropriate gear will include comfortable clothing, broken-in walking shoes (no new hiking boots please!), sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and a light jacket. On the trail, hikers should not carry any more than a light backpack, with room for two water bottles, lunch pack, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellant, and a book. Note that the hiking trails followed may vary with notice in order to accommodate the abilities of the guests or as may be dictated by weather conditions. Guides are always in contact with Okakambe Farm via cell phone and they all possess basic first aid knowledge and carry a first aid kit. Daily hikes vary from 15 to 30 km. The overnight camp sites are approximately 15 km. apart as the crow flies, but guides can alter the route to suit the fitness levels and preferences of the group.

Bathing facilities at the overnight camps consist of drop toilets and hand basins. All meals, tea, coffee, juice and water are included. Light lunches of musli mixed with nuts and dried fruit as well as fresh fruit and perhaps a roll saved from breakfast are carried by the hikers themselves and so are limited to what can be easily carried while hiking. Experience tells us that most hikers do not eat much during the heat of the day and are usually find that fruit and water suit best. Dinners are more substantial, such as fried fillet of game wit\potatoes baked in cream, a green salad and dessert of baked pineapple with a hot brandy syrup, or grilled lamb with potatoes, onions and maize baked in foil with garlic butter accompanied by a carrot and pineapple salad and topped off with baked banana with hot chocolate sauce for dessert. Some evening meals consist of local dishes such as potjie – a hot-pot, where all of the ingredients are cooked in a big cast iron pot. Beer, wine and soft drinks are available for an extra charge. Special dietary requirements will be catered for upon advance notice.

ITINERARY
Day1:

Landing at Windhoek International Airport and transfer by motor vehicle (400 km.) to Okakambe Trails in the Namib Desert, where the guests will stay overnight at the Okakambe Trail Farm.

Day2:

After an early breakfast, guests depart on a morning excursion into the dune belt to track down some the most active small animals living in the desert, such as Side-Winders, “White Lady” spiders, sand diving lizards, Palmatogeckos, desert chameleons, scorpions, and many kinds of beetles. The guide will explain the sensitive desert habitat and the interaction between wildlife and plants as well as the dangers faced due to destruction by the human race. After lunch we will be taken on a township tour with a native guide, where you can meet and mingle with the locals in their market places, schools and homes. Overnight again at the Okakambe Trails farm house.

Day3:

Today's hike will take us past several historic smallholdings, which used to be the garden for the first settlers landing along the western coast of Africa. We will visit the “musical stones” and will be able to see more of the desert's very scarce flora as well as some very interesting rock formations. Overnight camp will be set under the starlit desert sky.

Day4:

Following a good breakfast, we hike into the seemingly endless rock canyons along the banks of the Swakop River, where guests should expect the unexpected, like finding crystals hidden among the rocks or in caves. It will be obvious to you why this part of the desert is referred to as the “moon valleys” or described as a “moon landscape”. Tonight's camp will be set in one of the dry rock canyons which offer stunning views over the desert plains at sunset.

Day5:

Today's hike takes us up to the oasis at Goanikontes to enjoy a refreshing rest by dangling our legs in a cold water rock pool. Afterwards, we will hike down the dry Swakop River towards the coastline, past ruins, historic remnants of Namibia's colonial settlers. Once again we camp under the stars with dinner served at an open fireplace.

Day6:

Our final hike will take us via moonscape back to the Okakambe base, just in time for lunch. In the afternoon guests will have time to themselves to clean up, relax, and soothe those aching muscles.

Day7:

Today we will enjoy a dolphin cruise on the ocean, where the skipper will try to dance with the dolphins and seals and -- if luck is on our side -- we might catch a glimpse of moonfish or leatherback sea turtles. On very rare occasions we might also get close to a whale. In the afternoon, guests are transferred back to Windhoek for an overnight stay at a local hotel or lodge.

Day8:

Transfer to Windhoek International Airport in time for your departing flights.
