Horsesense:

Horses and tack
Most of the horses we use on our ridces have been bred on the farm from mixed Criollo (native South American), English Thoroughbred Arabian stock, and Percheron resulting in a near perfect combination of toughness, agility, calm temperament and "mountain sense". Beginners and experienced riders alike have found them easy to ride, willing and good mannered. If you have previous riding experience you will be given plenty of opportunity to canter.

We have a range of tack including North American style, English style, Mclellan calvary, Chillean and traditional Ecuadorian "Chagra" style with its intricate leather-work and saddle horn.

These horses are well fitted for rides from 1 to 9 days around the eleven volcanoes of the area and fertile lands of the Machachi Valley. Riders of all ages and nationalities come to enjoy the fresh air of the mountains.

The Chagra is the cowboy of the Ecuadorian Andes. They dedicate their lives to riding horses and managing herds of cattle. Their attire includes animal skin chaps for protection against cold temperatures, a hat, and a wool poncho and scarf. The Chagras work mostly with Lidia breed (bull fighting) cows and bulls. The bull fighting breeds where introduced by Jesuits priests in the colonial times and are still used in small-town festivities and bullfights in the cities.   One of the main jobs of the Chagra consists of moving herds that are dispersed on the mountains to the farm corrals once a year.   They use the cabestro (lasso) handmade from bull skin.

 WHAT TO EXPECT:
 Getting There* :
Quito transfers to ride center or first night accommodations   from airport are included in our packages. Although our outfitter helps you acclimatize to the altitude, early arrivals in Quito should be considered.

Room and Board* :
Room and Board is a family-run organic farm and the hospitality of the Espinosa household is remarked upon by visitors who return year after year. You will be welcomed with a roaring log fire in the sitting room, and in your bedroom when the nights are cold. La Alegria can accommodate up to 24 people both in the farmhouse and a recently completed extension. The extension has been tastefully restored with solid cypress floors and beams and modern en-suite bathrooms with plenty of hot water and powerful showers. We have split-level family rooms which sleep five in comfort. Paty and her staff provide full board if required. All meals are tailored for hungry travellers, riders and hikers, and combine delicious Ecuadorian and international cuisine. Our visitors book contains many compliments to the chef at La Alegria! Vegetarian  and other special dietary options on request.

The hacienda house was built in 1911 alongside the railroad which was being built at the same time. Built in Franco-Italian style, the original features and beautiful gardens with colorful flowers and native trees remain today.  The house was built in the middle of an extensive dairy farming region, originally encompasing 600 hectares.  Its wide adobe walls (85 cm) were constructed on rock bases.  The inside walls are still decorated with wallpaper of the period and the front windows of blue, yellow, green and red contrast the yellow exterior and green of the gardens.  The columns in the entrances to the house and corrals are made with pumice stone (volcanic stone) that was brought from the Cotopaxi volcano.

Your hosts is the family home of the Espinosas. Your host Gabriel comes from a long tradition of equestrian sports. His grandfather bred racing horses close to Quito and his father, Renato Espinosa was a keen polo player. Gabriel followed in the same footsteps as a young man, horse-jumping and playing competitive polo. The hacienda is full of fascinating equestrian heirlooms, including antique side-saddles, cattle brands and traditional "Chagra" (Andean cowboy) tack.

Gabriel and Paty's three daughters are all keen riders, and the enthusiasm of the whole family is reflected in the quality of the horses at the farm.

The property is located just south of Quito, the capital of Ecuador), about an hour's drive. We are ideally situated on the lower slopes of Volcan Corazon (4788m) in the heart of the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", a spectacular valley dividing the eastern and western ranges of the Andes. From the garden of the hacienda you can enjoy breathtaking views across the valley to the extinct volcanos of Ruminahui (4712m), Pasochoa (4250m), Atacazo (4463m), and in the distance the mighty cone of Cotopaxi, at 5897m the highest active volvano in the world.
